    Who Is a Cobra Commando? About the Position

    Cobra stands for Commando Battalion for Resolute Action. It is a specialised CRPF unit raised in 2008 to counter Left Wing Extremism in jungle terrain, which is why personnel are often called Jungle Warriors. The force operates mainly in Naxal-affected states such as Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Maharashtra, and in 2025 the CRPF also deployed CoBRA units in Jammu and Kashmir for the first time.

    Personnel are not recruited directly into CoBRA. The allowance slab that applies to each rank should be confirmed from the Ministry of Home Affairs order, and these totals leave out HRA, transport allowance, ration money and deductions. Actual pay also rises with annual increments.

    Officers in Cobra follow the same matrix. An Assistant Commandant starts at ₹56,100 (Level 10), a Deputy Commandant at ₹67,700 (Level 11) and a Commandant at ₹1,18,500 (Level 13), before DA and allowances.

    HRA at 30% of basic pay would add ₹6,510 in an X-class city for personnel who live in rented housing, but it is usually not paid when government accommodation is provided. Personnel serving in remote operational areas often stay in camps, so HRA may not apply. Treat the in-hand figure as a model, not a payslip.

    In 2023, a Constable’s basic pay plus DA ranged from about ₹30,800 to ₹31,700. Adding the CoBRA allowance at ₹17,300 gives roughly ₹48,100 to ₹49,000 before other allowances.

    The 2026 DA rate of 60% was approved by the Cabinet and applied from 1 January 2026, with the Department of Expenditure order issued on 22 April 2026. The next DA revision, effective July 2026, is usually announced around September or October. I could not confirm a final July 2026 rate, so check the latest Finance Ministry order before relying on the 60% figure.

    Searches for Indian Army Cobra Commando salary and Indian Cobra Commando salary often mix up forces. CoBRA belongs to the CRPF under the Ministry of Home Affairs, not the Indian Army, so Army pay levels do not apply.
